The WAAF proved to be a vital part of the Royal Air Force (RAF) during World War II, and was formed to relieve male personnel or everyday day tasks and focus more on combat roles.

WAAFs roles' initially focussed mainly on clerical and admin durites, however, as time progressed, the ladies diversified into more skilled tasks, including mechanics, engineers, and technicians. WAAF numbers reached their peak of 182,000 members by 1943.
